WordPress: Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.

Problem: Your blog is stuck with the message "Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute."

So you tried to update something on your blog and ended up with a non-functional website which just sits there and says "Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute." You check again after a minute but still get the maintenance message.

Solution
Go to the root folder of your blog, find the file named ".maintenance" and delete it. Your blog should be working again.

Explanation

"As part of the automatic upgrade WordPress places a file named .maintenance in the blog base folder (folder that contains the wp-admin folder). If that file exists, then vistors will see the message Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute."

So it looks like something caused the update process on your blog to fail.

"Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance" has a simple solution, but it is nevertheless a confusing problem. Don't you wish WordPress detected if the user is an admin and displayed the solution to fix the problem along with the message? I do.
